Momentum M10 First Month Review:

Momentum M10 Electric Outboard on Flash (9 LIVES Dink) – Polycraft Tuffy 300 Repower

As a retired aviation professional who’s spent decades around high-reliability systems, precision engineering, and safety-critical environments, I approach any new propulsion tech with a mechanic’s eye and a pilot’s demand for predictability. After ditching the last drop of gasoline from my life aboard 9 LIVES, repowering our trusty Polycraft Tuffy 300 (affectionately named Flash) with the Momentum M10 was the logical next step for our 100% electric, solar-fusion lifestyle. One month in, living aboard in Fort Pierce, Florida, and using Flash every single day for liveaboard chores, I’m ready to call it: this motor is a game-changer for small-tender users like us.

Flash is our 10-foot Polycraft Tuffy 300 – a tough, rotomolded tri-hull tender that’s stable as a rock, weighs about 238lb dry, and was originally rated for a max 15 HP gas outboard. The short 15″ shaft recommendation matches the M10’s short-shaft version perfectly. Swapping out the old gas lump for the M10 (48lb motor + 13lb quick-release mount) plus the MB-6 battery (82lb) dropped our overall system weight while massively boosting capability. No more fumes, no oil changes, no carb cleaning – just clean, silent electric torque.

Everyday Liveaboard Life in Fort Pierce

Fully loaded

Full load of water 26 gal , 280lbs = no problem

Our routine hasn’t changed, but everything feels easier and safer. Typical day: haul rubbish to the marina dumpster, schlep 5-6 jerry cans of fresh water from shore (we’re off-grid, so water runs are non-negotiable), then head offshore a for a quick dip to cool off in the Atlantic. Back in time for fresh-caught fish tacos at Little Jim’s on the inlet. Fully loaded (2 adults, gear, water jugs, cooler, trash bags, sometimes dive stuff), Flash now has power and range to spare.

The instant torque is addictive – press the throttle and she leaps forward with that electric “whoosh” feel. She planes easily even when loaded heavy, something the old 9.9-15 HP gas setups struggled with in chop or with extra weight. Top speeds hit 15-17 knots in calm water (real-world, not lab), and acceleration feels more responsive than a 20 HP gas equivalent off the line. The slight high-power hum is there (far quieter than any gas motor ever was), but silence at cruise or low speeds lets you hear dolphins, birds, or just enjoy the peace.

Controls I Love

The fold-back tiller is genius for stowing or trailering – folds neatly without sticking out. The adjustable-resistance (friction-locking) throttle holds any setting perfectly, no constant hand fatigue like some twitchy electrics. To engage high power or reverse, you press a dedicated button – it’s a built-in safety lockout that prevents accidental full-throttle surprises or reverse slams. Magnetic kill switches (two included, lanyard style) give that aviation-grade redundancy I appreciate. The integrated high-contrast color GPS trip computer is a standout: real-time speed, power draw, and estimated range remaining (adjusted for load/conditions) means no range anxiety – it tells you exactly what you’ve got left.

Battery Setup – MB-6 Rocks

We’re running the required MB-6: 6.4 kWh at 72 V, NMC lithium-ion cells (safer chemistry with much lower thermal runaway risk than older types), waterproof marine-rated case, built-in BMS for protection, and >1,500 cycles expected. At ~37 kg it’s hefty but manageable for one person to lift/secure. Comes with a charger included in the motor purchase. Fast charging via shore power or our solar setup tops it up easily. We’ve got plenty of range even fully loaded – low-speed trolling or displacement gives absurd runtime (official tests show 68+ hours at 2-3 knots on similar hulls), and planing runs to the inlet or beyond still leave margin. Paralleling a second battery is an easy future upgrade if we want multi-day adventures.

Performance Highlights

Drawing from official data on near-identical hulls (Highfield 310, very close in size/weight/use to our Tuffy 300) with one MB-6 and light load, but our real-world loaded runs align closely:

– 2.2 knots (~4 km/h): 68+ hours / 150+ NM range – perfect for slow harbor puttering.
– 5-6 knots cruise: 4-17+ hours / 25-100+ NM – our sweet spot for chores.
– 11-12 knots: ~1.3 hours / 15 NM.
– 16+ knots planing: ~0.8-1 hour / 12-23 km – easy to hit even loaded, with torque to spare.

Flash gets on plane smoothly and stays there without porpoising in moderate chop. It’s “nippy and responsive” like the old gas tests promised, but quieter, cleaner, and more efficient.

Safety – Where It Shines for Liveaboards

No gasoline means zero fuel vapors, spills, exhaust, or fire/explosion risk – huge for a boat tied to our home. Fully waterproof IP-rated everything, passive seawater cooling (no pumps to fail), CAN-Bus integration for seamless motor-battery comms, and that real-time GPS range display prevent surprises. Throttle interlocks, magnetic kills, and the quick-release lightweight design reduce injury risk when handling. Silence improves situational awareness – you hear everything around you.

Bottom line

After one month of daily abuse in Fort Pierce (heat, salt, loading/unloading multiple times a day), the M10 has exceeded expectations. It’s transformed Flash from a basic tender into a capable, fun, reliable extension of our off-grid electric lifestyle. No regrets on ditching petrochems – this setup is safer, simpler, and more powerful than gas ever was for our use case. Highly recommend for anyone serious about electric repowering on small, hard-working dinks like the Polycraft Tuffy 300.

If you’re heading solar-electric and want a tender that planes with authority while keeping the boat fume-free, the Momentum M10 delivers. ⚡️⛵️
